The Hass avocado, originating from Southern California (Persea americana) is characterized by its dark green–colored, bumpy skin.
Typically weighing between 150 to 250 grams, when ripe the Hass avocado’s skin turns a dark purplish-black and gives under a gentle press of the thumb. High in oil content the Hass avocado is an excellent source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They also provide lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids – the healthy type designed to keep your heart healthy!
Meaning “strong” in Spanish, this variety has Mexican/Guatemalan origins and are slightly larger and more elongated than their Hass cousins and characterized by its deep emerald color and smooth, thinner skin.
Weighing between 200-300grams on average, Fuertes have a creamy taste and similar oil content to the Hass variety. And just like its Hass cousin, the Fuerte offers the same potent line up of vitamins and minerals and heart health omega-3 fatty acids.
Rwanda is blessed with an ideal climate for avocados, never getting to hot or cold. This gives Ikonyk Hills the capacity to provide year round supplies of Hass and Fuerte varieties. However, we do have our sweet spot which occurs between October – March, a time during which most of the other avocado producers are off-line. The fact that Rwanda grows year-round means we can maintain a consistent supply – we are here for you the entire year!
Ikonyk Hills currently uses air freight to deliver our avocados. We package our fruit in strong 4kg boxes and rely on our Rwandair colleagues to maintain proper cold chain temperatures throughout their journey to you.
Recently, Rwanda’s National Agricultural Export Board (NAEB) successfully completed two pilot sea freight journeys which brought fresh avocados to both Dubai and Rotterdam (Netherlands) via Mombassa using Maersk. This mode of transport is still being ironed out but we look forward to utilizing this form of transport in the near future.
Ikonyk Hills Farm is part of a larger cooperative of avocado farmers in Rwanda with the capacity to provide partners with a consistent supply of produce. Due to the land-locked nature of the country, our avocados are transported by air. Air cargo ensures our avocados are in transit for a maximum of three days, leaving our customers with a fresher product and a longer shelf life. We are able to provide quantities of 1 and 2 tones on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly schedule.
